Deal in Kent UK

Deal in Kent is a former fishing, mining and garrison town in England, which lies where the North Sea and the English Channel meet, 8 miles north-east of Dover and 8 miles south of Ramsgate. Deal used to be known as one of Kent’s best kept secret – streets of well preserved Georgian town houses, a wide range of interesting independent restaurants, and of course the beach and pier. Cheaper to live in than Whitstable and slightly less crowded – but for how much longer?

Deal pier is a distinctive post-war design, constructed in 1957 and designed by Sir William Halcrow & Partners.  It reaches some 275m into the English Channel, mainly from reinforced concrete slabs supported on concrete encased steel beams and was opened by the Duke of Edinburgh. It is unlisted. It replaced a Victorian pier that was damaged in 1940 by a drifting ship, the remainder being demolished to allow coastal guns a clear line of sight.

Up to 25 anglers at a time try their luck over the side, hoping to win the fish-of-the-month competition that’s been running since 1992. Thornback ray, cod, dogfish seem to be the most common catch, with the odd bass making an appearance. It’s a gentle and friendly rivalry and everyone seems to know each other like a large extended family.
